The Historical Residence
Euterpe is a residence with a rich and fascinating history. Between 1905 and 1915 a rich textile merchant started to collect paintings from his artist friend from Palermo, Francesco Lojacono. He was a renowned exponent of the Southern “realist” trend, today seen as one of the greatest Italian landscapes masters of nineteenth century. In the following years the collection was enriched with works by the Master’s followers: De Maria, Bergler, Marchesi, Mirabella, De Francisco and Camarda.
In order to accommodate the important artist’s paintings, this noble building was built in the 1930s and became an art gallery and a family residence. Later, the collection of over 100 paintings was donated to the City Council. Today the collection is housed in the former building of the Filippini located in via Atenea, near the Town Hall. Here you can admire the magnificent Lojacono’s paintings, genuine “windows in time” through which you can enjoy the Sicilian landscape over a century ago. Thank to his ability to capture the true essence in everything, as the rugged and sun-kissed countryside, the dusty roads, the porosity of the rocks, the reflections of the sea waves, the light and shade of the Saracen olive trees, Lojacono earned the appellation of “Thief of the sun” .
